These are images of original letters written between 1895 and 1900. The recipient was Charles Rush Scott, a young man who had left his home in Ness County, Kansas, to look for work in Daviess County, Missouri, during the economic depression of the time. The writers are family members back home, extended family in the Pacific Northwest and nearby Missouri, and friends he made through his singing schools. Explanatory notes and more background information can be found in "Letters to Charley," along with transcriptions of the letters presented here.
